Week 4-November 15-22 "To get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping”
Wow!! This week has been extremely difficult for our tech team. We have had many meetings with the superintendent and found out our tech coach will not be coming back. Our district definitely wants to support the grant, but did not realize how much work would be involved to get the money. We have not been told what exactly will happen. We have been put on hold ...
For the last two weeks, I have been using the constructivism technique in my classroom teaching. I have taken a "hands-off" approach and let the students investigate and design their own projects. This was definitely a learning experience and it showed me that some students really need direct instruction and can not make decisions on their own. The high achievers did awesome! They figured things out on their own and asked appropriate questions and worked hard. I definitely need to work on how to allow students to work at their own pace and allow for more time. I am so use to having to move on to the "next" standard that some kids never finish their projects. This approach really works well for me because I have access to computers all the time and students enjoy coming and learning about new technology. I would like to see how other teachers are incorportating this approach.
The articles,21st Century Literacies and Information Literacy, focused on Infomation Literacy and gaining skills in Media evaluation. This helps students to become skilled at acquiring and managing information through the media. The skills that students need to become active members of a 21st century society are information, media, multi-cultural, and visual. I defnitely think these are areas in which are students lack knowledge. Students need to be more aware of the information "overload" age and be able to cifer through tons of information. I liked the idea teaching the kids through a cycle of questioning, identifying, evaluating, reflecting, and assessing. I have not done a great job with how to teach students to be more knowledgeable about what is good vs. bad research and websites. It is difficult for middle school students to understand this concept. I have enjoyed looking at the lessons on the 21st Century Literacies and I am looking forward to trying them in my classroom.
Our team has struggled a little with putting together our Needs Assessment Survey because of the need to "know" so much background information from the kids. This means that the survey becomes WAY too long but what info do we cut out? We wanted to do a web-based survey, but found out that it would be easier to analyze the data manually on a spreadsheet. .... We will see when we pass out the surveys next week!
